CBS’s failure to air John McCain’s statement in an interview that the U.S. military surge caused the “Anbar Awakening,” in which Sunnis turned against al Qaeda, leads the Post. The Awakening had preceded the increase in U.S. troops, the Post’s Seth Colter Walls notes. McCain’s mistake shows he has no idea what’s going on in Iraq and thus shouldn’t become president, writes Ilan Goldenberg, who notes reports by U.S. Col. Seth McFarland, the New York Times and Foreign Affairs that show that the Awakening occurred in 2006, before the surge began in early 2007.
