Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s retraction of his comment supporting Barack Obama’s plan for a U.S. troop withdrawal was “unconvincing,” according to the front page of the Post. The German magazine that reported the comment, Der Spiegel, is standing by its story, and U.S. newspapers are reporting that the retraction came only after U.S. officials called Maliki to talk about the remark, the Post notes. Excessive deregulation of mortgages has led to underestimated risk, financial bubbles and the current danger to the economy, writes Jared Bernstein, who blames policy makers.
