New polls show Barack Obama virtually tied in Virginia and North Carolina with John McCain, whose ultimate success will depend on the many voters who have yet to form a strong opinion of him, writes Jonathan Singer. Obama’s appeal among white voters, which is stronger than that of the last two Democratic presidential nominees, would translate into a decisive victory when combined with his strength among black and Hispanic voters, writes Singer.
