“The Big Rescue” of government-sponsored companies Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae leads the Drudge Report. In related stories highlighted by Drudge, the White House will ask Congress for the authority to buy more of the two mortgage giants’ stock, and that move means the government has become a big lender instead of just the lender of last resort. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is taking heat from federal officials for leaking a letter questioning the viability of IndyMac bank. And a new Newsweek poll shows Barack Obama and John McCain virtually tied, just a few weeks after its previous poll showed Obama leading by double digits.
