The Justice Department under the Bush administration illegally hired lawyers with conservative credentials and shunned those without them, notes the front page of the Post. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) decision to take presidential impeachment off the table in 2006 hasn’t hurt Democrats politically, but it has hampered Congress’s ability to look into Bush administration abuses, including the Justice Department’s hiring program and its terrorist surveillance practices, writes Robert L. Borosage.
