Maybe objections to offshore drilling would be reduced if the United States had a state-owned oil company, writes Andrew Stuttaford. In Brazil, the state-owned oil company has run into little public opposition over its offshore drilling projects, according to a Wall Street Journal story that Stuttaford cites. While conservatives will see a victory in a House Appropriations subcommittee’s decision to extend a federal voucher program for Washington, D.C. students for one more year, they won’t enjoy it for long, as the subcommittee’s chairman, Rep. Jose Serrano (D-N.Y.) said the extension was passed just to give the District a chance to restructure its program for next year, when its students won’t get any vouchers, notes John J. Miller.
