Democrats seeking to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, a measure making it easier for unions to organize, should consider a deal that would make it just as easy for employees to leave unions, writes Jon Henke. Democrats, who could easily have this deal, might be less interested in reciprocity and “free choice” and more interested in helping unions, Henke suggests. Democrats have effectively linked Republicans to oil companies because they’ve been able to turn gas prices into a fight over “big oil company profits,” writes Josh Kahn. Republicans should stop supporting subsidies for the companies, an approach that doesn’t mesh with free-market principles, and should instead talk about how Democrats rely more on oil from Saudi Arabia instead of domestic energy sources, Kahn adds.
