The Corner

Barack Obama should pick Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) as his running mate and John McCain should choose former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R-Mass.), writes John O’Sullivan. A veep pick shores up a candidate’s weakness, something that Webb — a veteran and champion of blue-collar voters — and Romney — an economic guru — could do for their respective parties, the blogger adds. Back in Congress, lawmakers can’t even do pork right, as they sent President Bush the wrong version of the $290 billion farm bill, notes Kathryn Jean Lopez. That means Congress will likely pass an extension of the old bill and then the correct version, delaying the new farm bill they had planned to quickly make law, she notes by linking to an Associated Press story.
