The fact that Democrat Mark Begich is even close in polls to Sen. Ted Stevens (Alaska), the longest serving Senate Republican, is evidence of Begich’s potential, Jonathan Singer writes. Begich leads Stevens, 48 percent to 43 percent, in a poll commissioned by Daily Kos, and he leads Stevens, 47 percent to 45 percent, in a Rasmussen survey. In Nebraska, another traditionally red state, Barack Obama has a chance to pick off one of the state’s electoral votes, which are handed out by congressional district, Singer writes. Linking to an analysis by polling expert Poblano, Singer notes that one electoral vote may make the difference if Obama wins the states Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) won in 2004 plus Iowa and Colorado.
