It’s no surprise that Barack Obama lost West Virginia, writes Josh Marshall, since the state falls smack dab in the middle of the Appalachian region. Those mountainous states include a population that has seen itself as self-reliant for decades, a characteristic that has resulted in an underdeveloped economy and older demographics that haven’t gone for Obama, Marshall adds.
