If John McCain campaign’s new “eco-friendly” line of merchandise foreshadows a plan to co-opt policies that appeal to the mainstream media, perhaps McCain can look forward to becoming the interior secretary in a Democratic administration, writes Andy McCarthy. But conservatives who think their candidates can suffer a principled defeat in 2008 and quickly bounce back in the next election should look at what happened to British conservatives during the Tony Blair era, writes Andrew Stuttaford. The Tories kept losing, despite sticking to their guns, until David Cameron took the party away from a “Thatcherite” set of mind, according to Stuttaford.
