Democrats are still divided by the prolonged presidential primary season, but Republicans aren’t completely united either, writes Todd Beeton. John McCain is failing to capture a fifth of the vote in recent primaries, even though he’s basically running unopposed, the blogger notes. And a new Washington Post/ABC poll shows 10 percent of those voting for him would defect to Hillary Clinton and 15 percent to Barack Obama in the general election, Beeton writes. Those numbers are similar to the defection rates among Democrats to the GOP in a generic, nameless ballot question, he adds. McCain is also having trouble building a lead over Obama in a traditionally Republican state, Virginia, Jonathan Singer writes. McCain and Obama are virtually tied in the latest Rasmussen survey, which has McCain at 47 percent and Obama at 44 percent (the margin of error is four points), Singer writes. In the previous Rasmussen poll, McCain had been up by 11 points.
