A Democratic House victory in a special election for a conservative Louisiana district Saturday is not enough to convince Matt Lewis that Barack Obama cannot hurt his party. Democrat Don Cazayoux, who won the House seat in Louisiana, had taken conservative positions and had faced a flawed GOP candidate who was outspent, writes Lewis after talking to several Republican operatives. That won’t be the case for all of the Democrats’ candidates, who are likely to be more liberal, Lewis notes. Conservatives also need to look after Obama’s relationship with the Teamsters, after the Wall Street Journal reported that the Illinois senator won their endorsement only after privately telling them that it would reduce federal oversight of the group, writes Amanda Carpenter. Obama had told Fox News’s Chris Wallace that he would work with Republicans on deregulation, Carpenter adds.
