The headline “Shock McCain Quotes Unearthed” in big red letters runs across the top of the Huffington Post. It links to a story by Sam Stein, who writes that John McCain’s comments about the war in January 2005 provide a stunning contrast to his words today. Back then, McCain “offered nothing short of a categorical ‘no'” when asked if the United States should set up a long-term troop presence like it did in countries after World War II. “I would hope we could bring them all home,” the Republican said on MSNBC. Arianna Huffington, who scrutinizes mainstream media’s political coverage in her new book, argues that even though the left’s policies on the war, American power, the economy, corporate responsibility and health care have become mainstream, the right still sets the media agenda.
