John McCain’s proposal to purchase mortgages from struggling homeowners is panned on the left and right, while conservatives cry foul at voting registration irregularities tied to a liberal community organizing group.
McCain’s plan would be a disaster, Townhall.com’s Amanda Carpenter proclaims, calling the proposal “Dodd-Frank on steroids.” Carpenter says there are still some unanswered questions about spending $300 billion to buy mortgages, such as how the government would decide which ones to purchase. Cautious homebuyers may not be thrilled about bailing out reckless ones, Kevin Drum says, predicting McCain may not score many political points for his proposal.
The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) has landed in hot water after registration irregularities in mltiple states, RedState’s Brian Simpson says, accusing the group of voter fraud. Perfection can’t be expected of voter registration groups and errors are bound to happen, The Weekly Standard’s Brian Faughnan decides, but reports of faulty registrations in Connectict, Wisconsin, and Nevada make it look like ACORN is breaking the law and contradicting Barack Obama’s “new” politics, according to the blogger.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), meanwhile, has lost an endorsement as Planned Parenthood has backed Democratic challenger Rep. Tom Allen (D-Maine) in the state’s Senate race, MyDD’s Todd Beeton notes. The group made the right choice, Beeton says, noting that Collins voted to confirm Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and other conservative judicial nominees.
