SUNDAY ROUNDUP
The announcement that negotiators have made breakthroughs toward an agreement on a Wall Street bailout deal has bloggers split over whether their proposal is the right one. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R), meanwhile, is derided by liberals for saying she’d support U.S. military strikes in Pakistan.
The tentatively agreed-upon proposal does well by homeowners as it requires the government to help prevent foreclosures, TalkLeft’s Big Tent Democrat proclaims. Final wording on that requirement will be vague, Big Tent Democrat predicts, but the blogger opines that the government will come through for homeowners if Barack Obama takes the White House. But the deal would effectively socialize the U.S. financial system, RedState’s Francis Cianfrocca protests, while Daily Kos’s BarbinMD wants to know just what taxpayers will be paying for, saying the language of the deal isn’t specific enough yet.
Palin is having trouble remembering John McCain’s talking points, Matthew Yglesias jokes after Palin told a Philadelphia voter Saturday that she would “absolutely” support U.S. military strikes on terrorist targets in Pakistan. McCain has blasted Obama for making similar comments, and Political Animal’s Steve Benen says it’s ironic that Palin would agree with Obama while McCain was attacking the Illinois Democrat during Saturday’s debate for similar statements.
A handful of Missouri sheriffs and prosecutors, meanwhile, have rankled conservatives by threatening to prosecute anti-Obama slander and pledging to remind voters that Obama is a Christian who wants to lower taxes for the middle class. The move is an assault on the First Amendment, John Hinderaker asserts at Power Line, while The Corner’s Stanley Kurtz calls it an intimidation tactic aimed at silencing Obama’s critics.
