Michael Bennet taken by surprise with debate question: ‘Was that directed to me?’

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) was surprised when asked his first question during Thursday night’s Democratic presidential primary debate in Miami.

NBC “Today” co-host and debate moderator Savannah Guthrie asked Bennet about a previous statement in which he said policy proposals with “no basis in reality” may as well be called “candy.”{mosads}

After she finished her question, Bennet asked, “Was that directed to me?”

“Yes, that was your quote,” Guthrie replied.

“Oh, that sounded like me,” Bennet said. “Thank you. I appreciate it.”

Bennet’s stumble quickly garnered reactions from social media users, who made fun of the senator.

“And now, to Michael Bennett, who may or may not know where he is. How many fingers am I holding up, Michael? Do you have someone that I can call?” one user tweeted.

Bennet is taking the stage Thursday night alongside nine other Democratic 2020 hopefuls.
