Dem senator: Trump ‘doesn’t believe in the other branches of government’

Sen. Ben. Cardin (D-Md.) said in an interview early Monday that President Trump “doesn’t believe in the other branches of government” after Trump tweeted that the courts were “slow and political” when addressing his travel ban.

“The president doesn’t believe in the other branches of government so he doesn’t believe the courts should have the power to stop him doing from what he’s doing,” Cardin said on CNN’s “New Day.” “But the courts have ruled and the courts said this abused the executive powers.”

{mosads}Cardin said that the U.S. could “do a more thorough job of vetting who come to this country,” but said there needs to be a “comprehensive” terrorism plan that doesn’t focus solely on those coming from other countries.

Trump sent out a string of tweets early Monday, echoing his previous calls for a travel ban to be implemented that would block refugees and travelers from six majority-Muslim countries.

“In any event we are EXTREME VETTING people coming into the U.S. in order to help keep our country safe. The courts are slow and political!” Trump tweeted.

Trump has reignited his push for the travel ban, tweeting about it in the wake of the London terror attack this weekend.

The Trump administration appealed their case to the Supreme Court Thursday after federal judges initially blocked the executive order.
