Golfer at center of Trump’s controversy wins championship at Trump course
The golfer who reportedly fueled President Trump’s claims that he would have won the popular vote if millions of “illegals” hadn’t voted is back in the spotlight.
Bernhard Langer won the Senior PGA Championship at the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va., on Sunday afternoon. It was the first major golf championship to be held at one of Trump’s courses since he took office in January.
Langer, a German golfer, was thrust into the political spotlight days after Trump’s inauguration in January when the New York Times reported that the president had told a group of congressional leaders that 3 million to 5 million people had voted in the election illegally, a claim that had already been debunked.
Trump reportedly told the room had heard from “the very famous golfer” that Langer had not been allowed to vote, even as he was surrounded by people who reportedly looked as if they should not be allowed to vote. Trump then listed Latin American countries those other voters could have been from.
Langer’s daughter told the New York Times at the time that her father is a German citizen who is not allowed to vote in the U.S. Langer did not comment for the Times.
Some White House aides also said that the story had happened to a friend of Langer’s, and that Langer had then shared the anecdote with Trump.
Langer reportedly told Trump’s son, Eric Trump, to send his regards to his father at the trophy presentation for the championship Sunday.
“Please give my best regards to your dad,” Bernhard Langer says to @erictrump at Sr. PGA championship trophy ceremony.
