Byrd funeral will be Tuesday in Arlington

The late Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) will rest at both the U.S. and West Virginia capitol buildings as part of his funeral arrangements.

Byrd’s body will lie in repose in the Senate chamber on Thursday for visitors to pay their respect to the longest-serving senator, his office announced Tuesday.

An honor guard will proceed Thursday with Byrd’s casket into the Capitol, where it will be placed on the Lincoln Catafalque, a display stand constructed in 1865 for the display of President Abraham Lincoln’s casket at the Capitol following his assassination.

Thursday’s remembrances will include an opportunity for members of the House and Senate to pay their respects to Byrd’s family and open visitors’ galleries throughout the day for members of the public. The Senate will be closed for official business during that time.

U.S. Senate Chaplain Dr. Barry Black will also offer an official prayer Thursday morning.

Byrd’s body will be transported to West Virginia that evening, where it will proceed past a namesake courthouse to the rotunda of the state capitol.

Byrd will lie in state there Friday, where a memorial service will be held just after noon that day.

The senator’s funeral will be held next Tuesday in Arlington, Va., and will be open to the public. Internment ceremonies will be held privately.
