Mullen: Washington has plan to attack Iran ‘if it comes to that’

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed Sunday that the administration does have an attack plan for Iran at the ready, but said the idea of both a nuclear-armed Iran and a U.S. attack gave him concern.

Adm. Mike Mullen, speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” said even though the outcome of an attack on Iran makes him “extremely concerned,” the military “has a plan if it comes to that.”

“Military actions have been on the table and remain on the table,” Mullen said. “I hope we don’t get to that but it’s an important option.”

Mullen stressed that the decision would be President Obama’s, but said the threat of a nuclear Iran and an attack on the Islamic Republic to stop that nuclear program “both have great downsides potentially.”
