D.C. delegate ‘grieved’ for Rangel
D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) weighed in on Rep. Charles Rangel’s (D-N.Y.) impending ethics trial, saying she was “grieved” by the congressman’s troubles.
Norton, appearing on WTOP’s The Politics Program with Mark Plotkin on Friday, said Rangel should resist calls to resign if he’s prepared to mount a defense against the 13 ethics charges facing the 80-year-old congressman.
“The kinds of things he’s accused of, normally
you wouldn’t resign about,” Norton said. “In fact, they have said he
should accept a reprimand.”
Rangel reportedly was negotiating a deal to settle the case, but the ethics panel pressed the case forward.
“I’m grieved and saddened,” Norton said. “He’s such a good friend, so I
really hope Charlie finds a way to deal with this situation.”
