Gingrich predicts Republican takeover that could trump party’s gains in 1994
Former House Speaker Newt Gincrich, architect of the 1994 Republican
takeover of Congress, predicted a similar windfall for Republicans this
November.
Gingrich, appearing on Fox News Sunday, predicted that Republicans will win between 40 and 60 seats.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they beat our record,” Gingrich said.
In 1994, Republicans won 54 seats to takeover Congress in former President Bill Clinton’s first term.
Gingrich said that there is anti-administration “momentum that’s
building in our country” that will result in House Minority Leader John
Boehner taking the gavel from Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The former
speaker also predicted that Boehner and Republicans will sign on to
Obama’s call for middle-class tax cuts even if the president is opposed
to extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.
“Republicans will probably surprise the president by supporting
whatever tax cut he’ll sign as long as it isn’t offset by a tax
increase,” Gingrich said.
