Holbrooke in critical condition
President Obama’s envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan — ambassador
Richard Holbrooke — is in critical condition following surgery to
repair a torn aorta.
According to the State Department, Holbrooke was admitted to George
Washington University Hospital after falling ill during a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday, and doctors completed the
surgery on Saturday morning.
Holbrooke is with his family and in critical condition, the department said.
The surgery comes as Obama’s diplomatic and national security teams
finish their year-end reviews of the progress being made in
Afghanistan.
