Pelosi believes Giffords will return

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Tuesday that she thinks Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) will one day return to Congress.

Pelosi said she believed that Giffords, the victim of an assassination attempt on Jan. 8, would one day return to her seat in the House. 

{mosads}”Yes, I think so,” Pelosi said on CNN’s “The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer” when asked if she thought Giffords would return to Congress.

The Arizona lawmaker has been hospitalized in Tucson, Ariz., since she was shot in the head during an attack at a constituent meeting. Despite the severity of her injury, doctors have said they’ve noticed signs of a remarkable recovery by Giffords, and they are optimistic about her chances to begin rehabilitation soon.

“The reports that I’ve been getting from her husband are very positive. You see what’s in the press,” Pelosi said. “And we’ll be looking forward to welcoming her back to her committee assignments and her special commissions that I’m just about to appoint her to, the board of the West Point of the U.S. military academy … which is something that she wanted.”

Pelosi was among the group who’d seen Giffords’s signs of progress upon visiting her in the hospital last week, when she opened her eyes for the first time. If Giffords were to return to Congress, it would be a remarkable recovery by virtually any medical standard.
