Doctors: Giffords’s condition now ‘good’

Doctors for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) upgraded her status from serious to good and plan to move her to a rehabilitation center as early as Wednesday, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center announced late Tuesday night.

Doctors plan to move her to the TIRR Memorial Hermann rehabilitation center after a final review of her condition early Wednesday morning.

{mosads}”Since arriving at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center on Friday, January 21, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has made strong progress in the Neuro ICU,” a statement from the hospital said.

Giffords, who was shot in the head during a Jan. 8 shooting rampage in Tucson, Ariz., that killed six and wounded 12 others, was transferred last week from University Medical Center in Tuscon to Memorial Hermann in Houston. She has been in the intensive care unit, unable to begin rehabilitation immediately because of a build-up of fluid in her brain.

Doctors for Giffords have described her recovery as something of a miracle as she made quick and substantial progress.

At Tuesday’s State of the Union address, members of Congress wore black and white ribbons in honor of the shooting victims, and an empty seat was reserved in recognition of Giffords.

President Obama also mentioned the congresswoman in his speech.

“As we mark this occasion, we are also mindful of the empty chair in this chamber, and pray for the health of our colleague —and our friend— Gabby Giffords,” Obama said.
