Rep. Giffords’s husband to speak at prayer breakfast
The husband of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) will speak Thursday morning at the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington.
Giffords’s office said Mark Kelly, a Navy captain and NASA astronaut, will deliver the closing prayer on behalf of his wife, who continues to recover at a Houston rehabilitation center from a gunshot wound suffered at a Jan. 8 constituent event in Tucson, Ariz.
{mosads}By tradition, President Obama is also scheduled to speak. The White House said first lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Biden will also attend.
According to Giffords’s office, other speakers will include Jose Enriquez, one of the rescued Chilean miners, and Randall Wallace, who wrote the screenplay for the film “Braveheart.”
This year’s event is chaired by Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) and former Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.).
Giffords has made what doctors call a miraculous recovery so far. Kelly tweeted Tuesday, “Today was a huge day for GG. Lots of progress!”
