Albright: America walking a ‘delicate line’ on Egypt

Albright, who served under President Clinton, emphasized that the U.S. should demand the Egyptian transition be rapid, democratic, and inclusive.

“Secretary [of State Hillary] Clinton has made very clear that the transition has to be pursued and that it has to have certain elements to it,” she said. ““I think the administration has been walking a very delicate line well.”

But she disputed the notion that the departure of President Hosni Mubarak would lead to chaos in Egypt. Tens of thousands of protesters have gathered in Cairo for the past week, demanding the immediate departure of Mubarak, who has headed Egypt for the last thirty years.

“We are about to be in a different era in Egypt,” she said. “There is never an indispensible leader….My personal opinion, the Mubarak era is over.”
