Gingrich launches website, has no other announcement

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) only announcement on Thursday was that he’s launched a website related to his possible presidential bid.

Gingrich did not announce that he intends to seek the Republican nomination in 2012, nor did he announce the formal formation of an exploratory committee to pursue the nomination.

{mosads}”[W]e are today establishing a website NewtExplore2012.com,” Gingrich said. “We will look at this very seriously and we will very methodically lay out the framework of what we’ll do next.”

Gingrich appeared at an event with Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) to talk about policy solutions to problems rooted in the 10th Amendment in the U.S. Constitution. After finishing brief remarks related to that, he asked if there were questions related to the 10th Amendment. There were none, and Gingrich faced a question about whether he would run.

There had been a great deal of speculation earlier this week that Gingrich would formally enter the race for president while he was in Georgia. Spokesmen for Gingrich worked assiduously to knock down that speculation, however, going so far as to issue a statement explicitly denying that Gingrich would announce that he’s running.

Instead, he simply announced the launch of his website, which offers hints about a possible run.

“I suspect you’ll have more to write about in the near future,” Gingrich said at the end of his press conference. He only took one question.

The website says it is “Paid for by Newt Exploratory 2012,” though, as of Thursday afternoon, there were no filings on record for such an entity with the Federal Election Commission. Gingrich’s website also launched an associated Twitter feed.
