Democrats have pulled out all the stops to avoid a repeat of 2010, when Republican Scott Brown won the late Sen. Edward Kennedy’s (D) seat, with President Obama and Vice President Biden visiting the state to stump for Markey.
{mosads}Gomez has sought to win over independent and centrist Democratic voters in the deep blue state. He said if elected, he would work to break Washington gridlock and reach across the aisle.
“I think I can work with anybody. I look forward to working with President Obama, I love forward to working with Sen. [Elizabeth] Warren [(D-Mass.)], I look forward to working with all the senators and congressmen down in D.C.,” said Gomez. “I have been bipartisan my whole life.”
Markey has sought to paint Gomez as a conservative Republican out of touch with most Massachusetts voters. Gomez rejected those claims on Sunday.
“I’m a green Republican. I believe that there is global warming,” he said. “I also firmly believed that we need to have an expanded background check, the Toomey-Manchin bill. I’m ashamed that only four Republicans voted for this bill. And I think the NRA is completely wrong on this bill.
“There are a lot of areas I don’t agree with, with Republican Party on,” added Gomez. “Congressman Markey wishes he was running against somebody else other than me.”
