Obama to meet with House GOP, Dems
Every single House member has an invitation to the White House this coming week.
The White House’s press office announced Sunday that President Obama will meet with House Republicans on Wednesday, and then the chamber’s Democrats on Thursday. (An earlier announcement had put both those meetings a day earlier.)
The White House release did not say what the meetings would be about, but it would be hard to imagine the $14.3 trillion debt limit, which the administration says needs to be increased by Aug. 2, not coming up.
On Sunday, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), the House majority leader, said negotiations that he and other lawmakers were having with Vice President Joe Biden and the administration on a deal over how to do that were going well.
{mosads}Both sides have said they are eyeing roughly $1 trillion or even more in deficit cuts over the next decade for what Biden has called a “down payment” on getting the country’s books in order.
Republicans have drawn the line on including any new tax revenue in the deal, while House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has said that his stance is that the amount of cuts must exceed the total the debt ceiling is raised.
For his part, Biden has said he is trying to convince Republicans to be more open about talking about tax revenue.
Legislatively speaking, the House is the only game in town next week, with the Senate away for Memorial Day.
