Former DNC chairman Tim Kaine says Rep. Weiner should resign

The former chairman of the Democratic National Committee has called for Rep. Anthony Weiner to resign.

“Lying is unforgivable,” said Kaine, the first Democrat to call outright for Weiner’s (D-N.Y.) resignation.

Kaine, who is running for retiring Sen. Jim Webb’s (D-Va.) Senate seat, said in an interview with a local Virginia television station on Tuesday: “Lying publicly about something like this is unforgivable and he should resign.”

{mosads}Kaine’s comments follow Weiner’s admission that he sent a lewd picture of himself through Twitter to a female college student in Washington state. At a tearful press conference, Weiner acknowledged he had lied to his family, colleagues and constituents when he initially said his Twitter account had been hacked.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Tuesday called for an ethics investigation of Weiner as Democrats sought to distance themselves from the congressman; a number of Republicans have called for Weiner’s resignation.

Weiner announced during the same press conference that he had no plans to resign his congressional seat.

A recent NY1-Marist Poll found that a majority of New Yorkers think Weiner should not resign his seat.
