Dem senator predicts ‘supercommittee’ members will compromise
{mosads}”One place I won’t go, I won’t go to raising the Social Security
retirement age because there are so many people who work in factories
and cut hair and work as waitresses — they can’t work till they’re 70,”
Brown said.
“Certain things for me are not negotiable,” Brown added. “Most things are negotiable.”
As
part of the deal President Obama and congressional leaders brokered
to raise the debt ceiling, a supercommittee of three House
Republicans, three Senate Republicans, three Senate Democrats and three
House Democrats will work to cut the deficit by $1.5 trillion.
Republicans have already begun stressing that the committee will
focus just on cutting federal spending and will not raise taxes.
Democrats have suggested they will return to pushing for tax increases
on the wealthy and closing subsidies in a supercommittee deal.
“I think the focus needs to stay on spending. This select committee
has been tasked with the job of trying to identify those cuts,” House
Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Wednesday.
