Poll: Seventy-one percent of GOP voters don’t want Palin to run in 2012

Most Republican and Tea Party-affiliated voters don’t think former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin should run for president in 2012, according to a new poll.

Seventy-one percent of Republican voters and 66 percent of voters identifying with the Tea Party don’t think the former Alaska governor should run for president in 2012, according to a Fox News poll released Thursday evening.

{mosads}Palin has not announced her plans to enter the presidential race, but continues to give speeches in key states and at Tea Party events. Palin has said she will make a decision in September about her intentions.

The poll also finds that Texas Gov. Rick Perry is currently the first choice for Republican primary voters in a field that includes Palin. Perry earns first place with 26 percent, while Palin is in third place. Perry also leads with 29 percent when the field is reduced to only the announced candidates. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney polled in second place at 18 percent and 22 percent, respectively.

The poll was conducted nationally by two polling firms and has an error margin of 3 percent.
