Republicans line up behind Sen. Johnson for leadership job
{mosads}”I think it’s important to have more people involved in leadership who have created private sector jobs, so I’m glad Ron is running and think his fresh perspective will be a strong addition to our leadership team and help break through the groupthink that often bogs down the Senate,” Corker said.
Coburn said Johnson’s background in business makes him a great fit.
“His long and successful career as a manufacturer and job creator gives him real credibility on economic growth, and on balancing the federal budget. He is a voice our leadership team needs,” Coburn said in a statement.
Johnson isn’t the only senator interested in the vice chairmanship — Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) also suggested on Thursday that he might be interested in running for the spot.
“Senator Blunt is considering how he can best contribute to next year’s debate regarding who we are going to be as a country,” Blunt spokeswoman Amber Marchand said in a statement. “He has received a lot of encouragement from his colleagues in the Senate and is taking a look at the Conference Vice Chair role.”
Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), the current vice chairman, is looking to move up a run on the leadership ladder, and will run to replace Sen. John Thune as chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee.
Thune, meanwhile, plans to run to replace Alexander as chairman.
