Majority of Americans favor ditching Electoral College

{mosads}But, for the first time since 2000, the majority of GOP voters support popular election of the president.

Fifty-three percent of Republicans surveyed favored a popular vote, while 61 percent of independents and 71 percent of Democrats agreed. Immediately following that election, 75 percent of Democrats supported a popular vote, while only 41 percent of Republicans did.

The Electoral College was most recently politicized in 2000, when George W. Bush won the election despite trailing Al Gore in the overall national vote.
