Bill Clinton wants a female president
Former President Clinton said he hopes there will be a female president in his lifetime — but is unsure if he will ever be a “first man.”
Clinton on Monday told a Chinese audience that a female president would be good for the United States.
His wife, Hillary Clinton, is considered the front-runner for the Democratic nomination in 2016 if she decides to run.
{mosads}”I hope we have a woman president in my lifetime, and I think it would be a good thing for the world as well as for America,” Bill Clinton said, according to Agence France-Presse.
Clinton said, however, he does not know yet if his wife will run. Hillary Clinton has said she would not start to seriously consider a run until sometime next year, but a number of Democratic lawmakers have preemptively endorsed her or encouraged her to run.
“But I do not know if she’s going to run, and there is no such thing as a ‘sure thing’ in politics,” he said.
Asked about his wife’s run in a different way, Clinton said he “couldn’t say” if he would ever be the “first man” in the White House.
“But I can give you an honest answer: ‘I have no idea,’ ” he said.
Clinton said his wife is less motivated by a “fear of failure” than she was a decade ago. He said he and his wife continue to feel healthy. If Hillary Clinton does decide to run, he said he would support her.
“If that’s what she wants to do, I will support her,” Clinton said. “But if she decides for whatever reason she doesn’t, I will support that.”
Clinton was in China to meet with the country’s president and promote the Clinton Foundation.
