Immigration ‘fix’ needed, McCarthy says
House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Sunday that immigration reform “is going to happen,” but declined to lay out a timeline for a House vote on the matter.
McCarthy insisted that the House would take immigration reform on a step-by-step basis, and noted that President Obama said recently he was OK with that approach.
{mosads}“We need to fix this system,” McCarthy said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) also said last week that immigration reform was far from dead. But Democrats point out that McCarthy has already said the House won’t vote on the issue this year.
The White House has said that Obama would only sign a comprehensive fix to the immigration system, no matter how the House deals with it procedurally.
