GOP: ObamaCare is part of ‘war on women’

Congressional Republicans on Saturday said that ObamaCare is part of a “war on women” administration.

The attack came as part of the GOP’s weekly address and was voiced by Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.), a nurse who serves as the chairwoman of the Republican Women’s Policy Committee. 

{mosads}Democrats during the last election claimed it was Republicans conducting a so-called war on women by seeking to limit access to contraception, abortion and by making insensitive comments about rape.

“If you want to talk about a ‘war on women,’ look no further than this healthcare law,” Ellmers countered in the weekly address. “After all, it’s often women who make the healthcare decisions for our families.  We put a lot of time and thought into these choices and how they’ll affect our budgets. So by canceling your insurance – despite a promise to let you keep your plan – the Obama administration is essentially saying it knows what’s best for you and your family.”

Spokeswoman for Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, Ashley Etienne, slammed Ellmers’ claims. “This pathetic attempt to undermine the Affordable Care Act is a profound insult to the intelligence of women across this country,” she said.

“Under the Affordable Care Act insurance companies cannot charge women more than men for health insurance coverage, and hundreds of thousands of women are now enjoying access to preventive care, like breast and cervical screenings. The question before House Republicans is why they’re trying so desperately to take these benefits away from women?,” she continued. 

Ellmers recounted a series of stories of people in her district she said lost their low-cost insurance in response to provisions of ObamaCare. 

Defenders of the Affordable Care Act admit that President Obama was wrong to say all people could keep their healthcare under his law, but say many of the canceled failed to offer adequate financial protection for subscribers.

Obama last month said he would seek to delay provisions that forced the cancellations but not all states and insurers are committed to going along. 

Ellmers repeated the GOP’s call to repeal or delay ObamaCare in light of Obama’s incorrect assertions. 

“That’s why the House has passed legislation to delay the individual mandate for all Americans and let you keep the plan you like.  These proposals are among the dozens of House-passed jobs bills awaiting action in the Democratic-run Senate.  Leaders there, however, continue to stand in the way of the American people,” she said.
