Sen. Murphy says he was “Grasslied”

Freshman Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) got bumped from his speaking slot Wednesday night on the Senate floor, saying he had been “Grasslied.”

Murphy was expected to give a speech on the Senate floor marking the one-year anniversary of the Newtown, Conn., Shooting that left 27 people dead, including 20 children.

Murphy was heading to the Senate floor before he realized Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) was speaking.

Murphy said he had been “Grasslied.”

I got Grasslied. Rs have taken over the floor (essentially protesting the rules change) so my floor speech is postponed.

But Murphy expressed no hard feelings.

Republicans commandeered the Senate floor Wednesday in an all night talk-a-thon to protest Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) move to use the nuclear option to limit the filibuster on executive nominees.

About 36 Republicans had signed up to speak during that time, including Grassley. They are expected to push the vote on Obama’s D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals nominee, Cornelia Pillard, until past midnight. They are expected to pick it back up and tie up business until Friday.

Murphy on Wednesday decried the lack of movement on gun control in Congress, saying it should be “ashamed” of itself. A package of gun control reforms, including universal background checks, failed in the upper chamber earlier this year.
