Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) will skydive Wednesday to mark the third anniversary of the Tucson shooting.
NBC News host Savannah Guthrie of the “Today” show will join Giffords for the dive.
The jump will air Thursday on “Today.”
{mosads}Giffords, 43, has made tremendous progress since being shot in the head on Jan. 8, 2011.
Six people died in the shooting, and 12 others were injured.
Organizers in Tucson announced on Monday that a permanent memorial marking the shooting will be built at one a courthouse downtown, the Associated Press reported.
The memorial will feature items including American flags, letters and candles that were collected at makeshift memorials across the city in the days following the shooting.
After the shooting, Giffords resigned from Congress in 2012.
Last year, she started a pro-gun control political action committee with her husband, Mark Kelly, called Americans for Responsible Solutions.
