Obama to meet with Maria Shriver

President Obama will meet with Maria Shriver on Tuesday to review a report examining the role of women in the workforce, the latest in a series of high-profile White House events addressing income inequality.

The report is modeled on a similar document prepared by Eleanor Roosevelt during former President John F. Kennedy’s administration. Kennedy was Shriver’s uncle.

{mosads}It was co-sponsored by the Center for American Progress, a liberal think-tank founded by Obama counselor John Podesta.

“The report focuses on the millions of women who are working hard but are consistently on the brink of poverty and highlights the need for the nation to address women’s role — dual roles as caregivers and breadwinners and the specific challenges they face,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said. 

“As the president knows well, investing in and supporting women over their lifetimes is one of the best ways to tackle income inequality and achieve greater social mobility. And he looks forward to learning about the findings of the report.”

The president has said he plans to “mobilize the country” around a “national mission” of ensuring an economic equality of opportunity in the coming year.

The president hosted a series of events at the White House last week promoting emergency unemployment insurance and special economic zones for persistently impoverished neighborhoods. Later this week, he’ll promote college affordability and high-tech manufacturing at events at the White House and in North Carolina. The White House has also invited corporate executives to meet with the president in the coming weeks.
