Cindy McCain to testify before Congress on human trafficking

Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) wife is slated to testify before the House on Wednesday about the ongoing effort to curb human trafficking. 

Cindy McCain currently heads the Arizona governor’s task force on human trafficking and has long been an advocate on the subject. 

She is among a panel of experts testifying before the House Appropriations subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science on “The State of Efforts to Stop Human Trafficking.”

{mosads}She recently made headlines ahead of the Super Bowl earlier this year by calling attention to the increase in prostitution that comes with major sporting events. A House Foreign Affairs subcommittee also held a hearing on the subject last month. 

Cindy McCain has been pressing states to pass legislation to give law enforcement more power when targeting human trafficking. A bill addressing the issue has been introduced in Arizona, her home state and the site of next year’s Super Bowl. 

She has also recently teamed up with Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) to urge Congress to pass legislation giving incentive for states to adopt “safe harbor” laws that put the priority on prosecuting the leaders of sex trafficking rings rather than the workers, who are sometimes underage.
