Capitol Hill car crash closes streets

A car traveling near the Capitol crashed and went airborne into a tree around 3 a.m. Friday, U.S. Capitol Police said. 

The police said the car was speeding north on South Capitol Street near the House office buildings before it went airborne and landed in a tree at the intersection of South Capitol Street and D Street SE.

{mosads}The police had no immediate information on the suspect, who was transported to a local hospital. 

“A vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed northbound along South Capitol Street crashed and went airborne into a tree. There is no further information on the suspect who was transported to an area hospital,” Capitol Police said in a statement. 

By noon Friday, the car had been removed from the scene. 

A number of streets around the Capitol closed Friday morning while the police investigated. By 1 p.m. most streets were back open and Capitiol Police had concluded its investigation. 

South Capitol Street between C Street and D Street remained closed for cleanup.
