Slam dunk? LeBron joins O-Care push
NBA superstar LeBron James is the latest celebrity to film an advertisement for the ObamaCare exchanges, appearing in a public service announcement posted on Friday.
“I know how important it is to take care of yourself, your friends, and your family,” James says. “That’s why I want to tell you about the health insurance marketplace at HealthCare.gov. “
James joins a roster of basketball stars past and present who have cut ads supporting the insurance exchanges. Earlier this year, Hall of Fame point guard Magic Johnson — whose 1991 announcement that he was HIV positive dominated headlines — taped a similar ad.
The administration is looking to encourage as many Americans as possible to enroll in the healthcare exchanges before the March 31 deadline.
In the past week, the president has also participated in a town hall on health insurance with Hispanic broadcasters, sat for an interview with WebMD and appeared with comedian Zach Galifianakis on his “Between Two Ferns” Web talk show.
On Friday, the White House released a video featuring first lady Michelle Obama and the mothers of celebrities including Jennifer Lopez and Jonah Hill.
It’s not the first time that James has appeared in a video to endorse a White House initiative.
During the team’s championship ceremony at the White House in January, James and Miami Heat teammates Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Ray Allen filmed a video with Michelle Obama to promote her “Let’s Move” childhood anti-obesity initiative.
The James videos are valuable free advertising for the White House. According to Forbes, James led all NBA players with $42 million in endorsement income from top sponsors like McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and Samsung last year.
