Obama, Pelosi do lunch

President Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will meet Tuesday for lunch, according to the White House.

The pair will share a meal in the private dining room, a small enclave just off the Oval Office.

{mosads}”The President and Leader Pelosi are meeting to discuss a number of issues on the Democratic agenda, including raising the minimum wage and common-sense immigration reform,” said a White House official.

Last week, House Democrats introduced a discharge petition, in hopes of winning over enough Republican votes to force a floor vote on the Senate comprehensive immigration reform bill. Pelosi has admitted the measure, which would require around two dozen Republicans to vie with House leadership, is unlikely to succeed, but Democrats hope it will intensify pressure on House Republicans to move their own legislation forward.

In a statement last week, Obama said he applauded the move by House Democrats.

“Immigration reform is the right thing to do for our economy, our security and our future,” Obama said. “A vast majority of the American people agree. The only thing standing in the way is the unwillingness of Republicans in Congress to catch up with the rest of the country.”

House Republicans have also signaled their opposition to legislation that would raise the minimum wage. The Senate could begin debating a bill that would raise the hourly rate to $10.10 per hour either later this week or next.

“The big difference between giving a raise in the minimum wage instead of a tax break to the very wealthy is the minimum wage worker will go out and spend every penny of it because they’re living on the edge,” Vice President Biden said in the weekly address on Saturday.

Pelosi and the president are the only attendees expected at the lunch, according to a congressional source.

The pair could also discuss the upcoming midterm elections. Last month, the president invited Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to the White House for a closed-door strategy session on the 2014 races. Later this week, the president will head to Chicago for a pair of high-dollar fundraisers benefitting the Democratic National Committee.
