Huckabee: Gay marriage stance stems from Bible

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) on Tuesday night said his opposition to gay marriage is based on the Bible.

During remarks at an Iowa fundraiser for the Faith and Freedom Coalition, the potential GOP presidential candidate reiterated that he is not homophobic and doesn’t “care what people do personally in their individual lives.”

{mosads}”When people say, ‘Why don’t you just kind of get on the right side of history?’ I said, ‘You’ve got to understand, this for me is not about the right side or the wrong side of history, this is the right side of the Bible,’ ” he said, according to reports. “And unless God rewrites it, edits it, sends it down with his signature on it, it’s not my book to change. Folks, that’s why I stand where I stand.”

Huckabee, a former Baptist minister, has long been known for his position on social issue. He won the Iowa caucus in 2008 but eventually lost the GOP presidential nomination to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)

Huckabee asked why Christians allow themselves to “take it in the teeth” in the United States, alluding to the Supreme Court’s recent refusal to hear a case that questioned whether a wedding photographer was allowed to refuse to shoot a gay wedding ceremony.

“Why is it that Christians stand back and take it in the teeth time and time and time again?” he asked. “But we cannot change this country if we do not rise up and vote with an informed mind and a committed spirit.”

Huckabee also blasted the National Security Agency and the Internal Revenue Service. He talked about the corruption between Washington and Wall Street as well.

He said there is something horribly wrong when “when we do not stand back and boldly declare that when you punish the productivity of good people and reward the reckless irresponsibility of others, you cannot expect the blessing of God in your economy and in your life.”
