Obama updated on high school stabbings

President Obama has been updated about a mass stabbing at a Pittsburgh-area high school, the White House said Wednesday.

{mosads}Press secretary Jay Carney told reporters that the president’s thoughts and prayers were with the victims and their families.

According to multiple media reports, at least 19 students and a security guard were injured, after a 16-year-old high school student wielding two knives went on an early morning stabbing spree at his high school.

At least three students were undergoing surgery, a spokesman for a regional hospital where victims were being treated told NBC News.

“None of these are superficial wounds,” Dr. Chris Kauffman, the hospital’s trauma director, said. “These are all significant stabbing wounds, every one.”

The president was traveling to Texas, where he is slated to speak at a memorial service for the victims of last week’s mass shooting at Fort Hood.

According to Carney, while at the service, Obama and the first lady “will meet with families of the deceased, as well as of the wounded, and offer whatever comfort he can.”

“The president described accurately this event as heartbreaking,” Carney said.
