Poll: Unemployment still top problem in US

Unemployment, dysfunctional government and the state of the economy remain the top problems in the United States, according to a Gallup poll released Monday. 

Twenty percent of people surveyed said unemployment or jobs is the most important problem the public is facing in May. That’s up from 14 percent in April. 

The poll found 19 percent named dysfunctional government as the most important problem and 17 percent said the economy in general. 

{mosads}All three issues have topped Gallup’s “most important problem” list since the beginning of the year.

Poor healthcare and hospitals, and their high costs, was the fourth issue on the list.

Three percent of people named the environment, race relations or racism and immigration or illegal immigrants as the most important problem, among others.

A quarter of Democrats named unemployment as the top problem, compared to 17 percent of Republicans.

More Republicans, 21 percent, said the economy in general is the top problem. Only 13 percent of Democrats, by contrast, also named the economy.

The poll surveyed 1,028 adults from May 8 to 11 with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
