First lady urges Dems to ‘dig deep’

First lady Michelle Obama waded into politics Thursday night, slapping Republicans for trying to interfere with her work on childhood obesity. 

“It’s gotten so bad, they’re even trying to block the work that I do on childhood obesity and that’s really saying something,” Obama said during her 20-minute remarks. “I mean, for most folks in this country, making sure our kids get decent nutrition shouldn’t be that controversial.”

{mosads}Speaking in her hometown of Chicago, the first lady asked donors to “dig deep” and help Democrats win in 2014, calling it her husband’s last election. 

“We need to be engaged right from the beginning and that’s where all of you come in,” Obama said at the event, where tickets ranged from $500 to special donations ranging from $10,000 to $20,000. “Because there is something you can do right now today to make a difference and that is to write a big fat check. I kid you not. I’m going to be honest with you. That’s what we need you to do right now. We need you to write the biggest fattest check that you can possibly write.”

The first lady also briefly spoke about gun violence in a city that has been plagued by it. 

“There are kids like the kids here in Chicago who are confronting outrageous levels of violence,” she said. “Kids who are losing their lives day after day. Shootings that devastate our communities and break our hearts and rob this country of so much talent and promise. Those kids deserve so much better than this.”
